Why You Should Take a Postural Evaluation

Each person is unique in the shape of their body, their flexibility, their genetics, their activity, their habits, their emotions, thus defining their body posture. The definition of “correct posture” is: “any posture that does not overload the spine or any other element of the locomotor system,” and vicious posture, which overloads the bone, tendon, muscular, and vascular structures permanently. This may wear down the body in one or more of its elements, affecting the spine.
That said, when we adopt a correct posture we enjoy balance, stability, and symmetry, while when the posture is incorrect for a noticeable period, our body presents a postural imbalance, causing muscle tension, pain, bone complications, stiffness, and malformations.
What Is Postural Evaluation and Who Carries it Out?
Postural evaluation is an exhaustive analysis of the patient’s body posture both statically and dynamically, to detect early alterations in the musculoskeletal system or any misalignment in the spine (anterior, posterior, and lateral). The physiotherapist is the professional in charge of carrying out this evaluation.
When We Should Do a Postural Evaluation and Why it Is So Important to Do It?
A postural evaluation is highly recommended, especially during childhood and adolescence since if these disorders are detected at an early age, they have a high percentage of success in their control and correction. Even so, regardless of age, it is advisable to have a postural evaluation to prevent future conditions or correct existing ones.
What Are You Going to Do to Me During This Postural Evaluation and What Will My Physical Therapist Pay Special Attention To?

For example, the natural inclination that your head presents, the alignment of your spine, the height of your shoulders and shoulder blades, the possible inclinations present in your trunk, the position, and the height that your elbows present. The position and rotation of your pelvis will be analyzed.
